Emergency First Aid (PFA)
This course teaches the skills and knowledge required to recognise and respond to
life-threatening emergencies and provide a first aid response to a casualty in a range of
situations.
Suitable for people in workplaces and members of the public who require a basic first
aid course.
The course topics include the DRSABCD action plan and responding to emergency situations,
cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), burns, asthma, anaphylaxis, sprains, and strains.

- The DRSABCD action plan and responding to emergency situations
- Managing unconscious casualties
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- Using a defibrillator (AED)
- Legal issues in first aid
- Infection control
- Diabetes
- Heart attack
- Asthma
- Anaphylaxis
- Wound and bleeding management
- Burns
- Fractures and dislocations
- Sprains and strains
- Head and facial injuries
- Spinal injuries
- Medical emergencies
- Choking
- Heat and cold induced conditions
- Poisoning management
- Bites and stings

Statements of Attainment
On successful completion of this course you will be issued the following
statements of attainment:
- SJFAS01 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- SJFAS02 Apply Basic Emergency Life Support
St John recommends, as per the First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice and
the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines, that resuscitation skills are
renewed every 12 months.
Assessment Information
A successful outcome for this statement of attainment will be determined by a
range of different assessment methods including written assessment
(questionnaire), observation of simulated and practical activities etc.
You will be required to demonstrate CPR on a manikin on the floor.
